In 1977, a committee appointed by the city of Pembroke Pines came up with the idea of a multi-use facility to accommodate the needs of the citizens of Pembroke Pines, the Broward County School System, and social service organizations. Governor Bob Graham's task force strongly promoted the idea that future schools should be constructed as multi-purposed such as the Walter C. Young Resource Center proposal.  Representative Walter C. Young, a retired school principal himself, saw great potential in this concept. In fact, he became the cheerleader for the idea, pushing people to build such a facility. With matching $8.5 million in state funding to build it, he got an agreement signed by The City Of Pembroke Pines and The Broward County School Board.

In April 1986,  Representative Walter C. Young and the School Board Chairman, Don Samuels, took part in the historical groundbreaking of the center. The center would eventually be named after Representative Walter C. Young.

We have already won two statewide awards for multipurpose resource centers in Florida. We are the prototype for multi-used facilities, not only in Florida, but in all of the U.S. We house a middle school, a large community school (nights, weekends, and summer), a child development center (Bright Beginnings), racquetball courts, a social service center, a multi-use recreational center, and a dinner theater.

We now have a regional library on the campus that is also opened to the public.  There, students will find a much larger selection of books and will have access to the Internet.  An Olympic sized swimming pool, a diving well, a toddler pool plus 2 roller hockey rinks has been completed on the park property just north of our campus.

Throughout the U.S., there are many school facilities, many of them are being under used. Many are used only 7 to 8 hours a day, and 11 months out of a year. What about a school that operates year round at longer hours to fulfill the total need of our communities.

Here at the Walter C. Young Resource Center, we do just that. We are the 35 acres in the center of Pembroke Pines, located in southwest Broward County, Florida.  Adjacent to a brand new health facility, Memorial Hospital West, and a county recreational facility, C.B. Smith Park. We are opened year round, Monday thru Sunday.  Not only serving the students, but also the human resource needs of the community.  We give the whole community the direct benefit of community tax dollars.

We supply our students with the best educational equipment and programs. We know education is the best thing for our future, our children's future, and our community's future.
